Portuguese parents go back to school for Internet safety20 June 2005
In Portugal, a private university recently announced a course for parents on "Children's Internet Safety", and has launched a big marketing campaign. Media interest on the subject is rising and some articles have been published on magazines and newspapers. |
A recent article was published on this course and interviews with parents were made to know how parents deal with the problem. The general view is a wise one of guidance and dialogue instead of censorship or repression.
A UK study from the London School of Economics found that about 18% of the parents don’t feel prepared to teach their children about the risks on the Net. This percentage may be much higher concerning Portuguese parents.
The article gives some advice, taking recommendations from national partners into account.
It highlights five safety measures according to the children's age:
- 2 - 4 years old - images and sounds stimulate children – children should never be left alone
- 5-6 years old – start surfing on the Net – the computer should be visible so parents can monitor their searches
- 7-8 years old – they use email and try to search for inappropriate sites – filters are advised
- 9-12 years old – they chat with friends – they must be warned about chatting with strangers
- 13-17 years old – they know more about the Internet than their parents – (the risks are higher and illegal material and crime may be an issue)
