Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day is organised by INSAFE each year in February to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world.

The 6th Safer Internet Day took place on 10th February 2009 under the patronage of the Information Society and Media Commissioner, Viviane Reding and was celebrated through 500 events in 50 countries all over the world. In 2009, the day focused in particular on youngsters’ safety on social networking sites.

Children today dive into the world of internet and mobile technologies very early and often become fully-fledged technology-savvy, web-surfing teenagers. Because these technologies help them study and give them exciting new ways to socialise with others, they are often faster to use them than their parents. We need to make sure that whenever they use online or mobile services, they can recognise potential risks and deal with them. Read more

On Safer Internet Day, at the central event organized by the European Commission in Luxembourg in the presence of Mrs Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Information Society and Media, a self-regulatory document has been signed by major social networks active in Europe regarding the online safety of under 18s. Quiz quest winners, SID 2009Quiz quest Winners!
On Safer Internet Day, the winners of the Safer Internet Day quiz were presented with their awards at a ceremony in Luxembourg. Andreas from Austria, Adrian from Germany, Daniel from Poland, Charlotte from the UK, Sarah from France and Juris from Latvia were given their prizes by Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media. The winners came to Luxembourg thanks to the support of Liberty Global Inc. (UPC), Microsoft and  Inhope. They received games offered by PEGI and Insafe organised their travel.

Safer Internet Day 2009 is the launch date of an information campaign empowering teenagers to keep control when online. This campaign, supported by the European Commission's Safer Internet Programme, targets young people between 12 and 17 years old and covers all Member States, Iceland and Norway.
At the core of the campaign there is a video which features a young girl who is being bullied online, but takes control by reporting this abuse. “Block bullying online! Keep it fun, keep control” is the final message of the video. Watch the video
