PEGI in the Czech Parliament

The Czech Safer Internet Combined Node took its first very serious step at the top political level of the Czech Republic. The 6th of December 2007 became the day when serious discussions concerning the protection of consumers in the field of interactive games started.
The chair of the sub-committee on consumer protection of the committee of economic affairs of the Czech parliament invited representatives of Saferinternet.Cz (CzeSICoN project) to comment on the common initiative of Saferinternet.cz and the Czech association for consumer protection to amend the Consumer Protection Act, which was under discussion in the Czech parliament.

The objective of our initiative is to introduce important elements of selfregulation of the game publishers into the Czech legal system. The sub-committee members invited us to tell more about our initiative and about similar matters at the European level. That is the reason we invited representatives of ISFE who are experts in the field to come with us and participate at the meeting.

Mr. Patrice Chazerand, ISFE secretary general introduced ISFE and explained the basics of the PEGI system. Very fruitful discussion after the presentation concluded in the recommendation to also discuss the issue in the education commission of the Czech parliament. Regulation in the field of interactive games including rating of content and age is a very complex issue and the discussion will be continuing for some time. The goal seems to be clear however and acceptable for the Czech MPs. We do hope that the relevant law will be adopted taking in account the European lessons and PEGI experiences.

Saferinternt.cz is actively promoting various safer internet issues at both regional (CEE SIC 2007) and national level. It seems to be bearing the first very important and tangible fruits of increasing its visibility and broadening the scale of possibilities to act in an efficient way.
