New awareness tools from the Swedish node1 December 2005
Sweden has launched two brand new tools, a short introductory story about internet safety aimed at younger children and material about misuse of the internet aimed at children from 13 to 16. |
“Sniff the Net” is a short story in the form of a fairy tale together with a teacher’s handbook and is primarily targeting older preschoolers and the first years in school. The purpose is to lay the foundations for a curious and critical stance to the internet.
Teachers and kids can read the short story together and then continue with discussions, games and other activities related to the story. Åsa Kronkvist wrote the story and the teacher’s handbook. She is a qualified author of learning material for young children with several years of experience and is currently working as an ICT-educationalist at the University of Kristianstad.
“Lifetime” is a brochure describing various scenarios that can happen to the unaware teenage internet user. The purpose is not to deliver ready-made answers but to inspire discussions and dialogue in the classroom. What could happen when you publish pictures of yourself or friends on the Internet? What language is acceptable on a chat? How do you know what is true or not on the web?
A teacher’s handbook will be available for download at the Microsoft web page. Microsoft produced the material in cooperation with the Swedish node.
