Knowhow for Young Users A teachers’ handbook entitled “Knowhow for Young Users” has been developed by klicksafe as a part of the qualification measures for teachers in Germany. The handbook for teachers is a practically oriented introduction to the wide area of online and net communication.

The teachers’ handbook is based on the experience already gathered in the implementation of klicksafe courses for teachers and disseminators, offering them a broad spectrum of helpful support and practical tips for classroom work.

The essential characteristic is that the units are easy to comprehend and do not require previous training; the units can directly be used in lessons without extensive and time-consuming preparation. The handbook is divided into nine “building blocks” and contains chapters and teaching units on the various aspects of protection for minors:

Block 1 | Getting started: what exactly is the problem?
Block 2 | What we should know about the internet: fishing in the net of nets
Block 3 | What we like: communicating + games
Block 4 | How we present ourselves: self-portrayal on the net
Block 5 | What we should know: legal matters and law on the internet
Block 6 | What we should remember when shopping: making purchases online
Block 7 | What we don’t need: undesirable and unnecessary things
Block 8 | What we should always observe: essential security measures
Block 9 | What we attend to in the future: tips

For each of the topics on protecting minors in the media, the handbook offers three teaching units (on copiable worksheets) with different degrees of difficulty – a total of about 90 worksheets. All the topics are structured in the same way, with information on content, links, recommendations on method and didactics, and the worksheets for teaching.

The teachers’ handbook was developed in cooperation with schoolteachers and media educationalists. It is distributed at present in cooperation with education ministries in the Federal States in Germany and can be ordered by schools and teachers. The handbook was published in German but can be translated for use and adaptation by other nodes and countries.
