Safe websites for kids12 September 2005
It is widely agreed that pornographic or violent content is unsuitable for children. There are however a number of other criteria that can be used to determine if a website is appropriate for younger surfers. |
Zap, a portal for children run by European Schoolnet, uses the following criteria for assessing whether a site is 'safe' and appropriate for young Internet users.
• Content must contain information relevant for the intended audience and uses appropriate and suitable vocabulary, language or concepts.
• The site must not contain, promote, or lead to illegal or unsuitable material, including: o paedophilia o pornography o violence o racial hatred o prostitution o addiction to drugs
• The website must not contain or lead to unmonitored chat or bulletin boards bringing children into contact with strangers without adult supervision.
• Advertising should be kept to a low level, and must be suitable for a young audience.
