US students drive Internet safety campaign25 July 2005
As one of the most “connected” generations ever, today’s youth reap the benefits of the Internet, but also face its numerous nightmares. Pedophiles, bullies, and pornographers endanger every child’s online experience. That’s where the DRiVE campaign comes in. |
DRiVE is an initiative of the i-SAFE Youth Empowerment Campaign. DRiVE offers an innovative mentor program that empowers students in grades 5 though 12 to take the Internet safety message out of the classroom—to their peers, families, schools, and communities at large.
The i-SAFE Safe Schools Education Initiative and Outreach Program empowers world youth with the critical-thinking decision-making skills to safely and responsibly take control of their Internet experiences.
Students learn best through active participatory learning. Constructive learning about Internet safety in “real life” helps students retain this knowledge as they build an association between the physical and cyber worlds.
The i-SAFE program fosters collaboration between students and their teachers through cooperative group learning activities, and then takes the educative process a step further through empowerment activities. Students create materials and media such as posters, webpages, brochures, newspaper articles, Public Service Announcements (PSA), and videos, to teach others the message of Internet safety.
These opportunities for youth empowerment encourage students to internalize and take ownership of the concepts learned, as they advocate for a safer cyberspace to their peers and the community at large. In this way, kids and teens learn responsible and safe Internet conduct by educating others.
