Insafe family e-safety kit in European households

“A beloved child has many names”. According to this Swedish saying, the more loved one is the more names one has. Launched on Safer Internet Day 2008, 12 February, the Insafe kit featuring Alex (aka Julien, or Kuba), Zeta (aka Anna, Céline, Emma, Zosia, Pika, or Teodora) and Hedvig (aka Julia, Metka, Camille or Laura) has already been translated into more than ten languages and is circulating in 8 European countries (Austria, Belgium Ireland, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia and Spain). If we are to believe the Swedes, this bodes well for its success!
The e-safety kit builds on the expertise of Insafe, the European network for internet safety awareness. It guides families with children aged between 6 and 12 years through the basics of the internet via the story of two youngsters, Alex and Zeta, their parents and the IT genius, Hedvig. Colour-coded chapters highlight four key e-safety themes: Security, Communication, Cyberbullying and Entertainment. When opening the colourful folder, families will find:
  • Two e-safety booklets; a family fun section and a parental guide
  • A family certificate
  • Emoticon stickers
  • 12 cut-out situation cards.

Through equal awareness of risk and remedy, localised useful links and contacts, fun activities and challenging discussion topics, the kit aspires to spark discussions about security, privacy, respect, codes of conduct etc. You don’t think this has much to do with technology? Think again, it is time you got kitted out!

More about the Family e-safety kit

Meet the characters

AlexAlex (aka Julien, or Kuba): Alex is a ten year-old boy who is keen on computers and glad to have one at home. That way he can look up cool information on Dinosaurs and other pre-historic creatures - his current passion - and play online games. He is happy to learn more from Hedvig so that he can impress on his friends, parents and little sister, of course!

Zeta
Zeta (aka Anna, Céline, Emma, Zosia, Pika, or Teodora): Zeta is 6 years old - almost seven!- and very curious. She admires her brother, Alex, but sometimes he makes her feel jealous; he can seem so clever. Maybe that is why Zeta loves learning new things and never quits before she has understood. She’s quite confident with reading and writing and very excited about being able to use chat rooms.

HedvigHedvig (aka Julia, Metka, Camille or Laura): A young “techy” neighbour who has just started studying computer science at University. She has always liked exploring technology and is keen on sharing knowledge. Every now and then she baby-sits Alex and Zeta. As she cares about them a great deal, she is very keen on teaching them how to stay safe online.

ParentsParents: The parents have decided to buy a home computer and connect it to the internet. They place it in their living room so that they can keep an eye on how their children are using it. They’re very glad to have Hedvig around as she  knows more about computers than they do, and  is also someone their children look up to.
