Awareness node addresses Polish Senate

On 15 March 2005 the Polish safer Internet awareness node addressed the upper chamber of the Polish parliament. They presented Internet safety awareness raising activities and called for Internet safety to be integrated into the school curriculum.

The conference was hosted under the honorary patronage of the Senate chancellor, Longin Pastusiak, who was present to open the event.  The main theme was the “Safe Poland” initiative, a government programme aiming at making citizens’ life safer.

Representatives of the Ministry of Education and Sport, Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Police Academy from Szczytno spoke at the conference.  A strong focus was put on the role and importance of local initiatives in the realisation of the “Safe Poland” programme.

Nobody’s Children Foundation (FDN) was among representatives of Polish non-government organisations presenting their activities.  FDN is a member of the Polish awareness node for Internet safety, supported by the EU Safer Internet Programme.

FDN representative Łukasz Wojtasik  presented the Polish node and previous projects related to Internet safety conducted by FDN. His presentation was well received by the participants and was lauded as an example of efficient and well-coordinated action by a NGO.

Łukasz Wojtasik said:

"Recent research findings in Poland reveal that when it comes to Internet dangers there is lack of awareness, especially among the youngest Internet users.”

Mr Wojtasik called for the Ministry of Education to integrate safer Internet education into the school curriculum.  He also called for police training on Internet crime and greater cooperation between the police and national hotline for reporting illegal content.

Parliament members at the conference agreed on the importance of conducting projects dealing with illegal and harmful content in the Internet.  They assured they would support further actions conducted by the Safer Internet Programme consortium in Poland.
