SID Quiz Winners

In November 2008, Insafe launched a quiz for the 6th celebration of Safer Internet Day on 10 February 2009. The quiz sported questions such as “What is the capital of the Czech Republic?”, “Which flowers were painted by famous Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh?” and “What kind of personal information may be given online to unknown people or websites without any concerns?”.

Combining questions on technology, privacy and safety with questions on European Culture, History and Geography was done to underline how important an information source the internet is and how it can support young people in learning.

6,360 young Europeans between 10 and 15 years of age took on the challenge to answer quiz questions randomly drawn from a pool of over one hundred queries on the set of subjects specified above. Contestants had to complete the quiz by matching pairs on a digital memory board.

On Safer Internet Day, the winners of the Safer Internet Day quiz were presented with their awards at a ceremony in Luxembourg. Andreas from Austria, Adrian from Germany, Daniel from Poland, Charlotte from the UK, Sarah from France and Juris from Latvia were given their prizes by Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media. The winners came to Luxembourg thanks to the support of Liberty Global Inc. (UPC), Microsoft and Inhope. They received games donated by PEGI and Insafe organised their travel.

Most of the young people had never been abroad before and were really excited about travelling to a European capital and meeting peers from other countries.

Insafe will continue involving young Europeans around its Safer Internet Day activities in the future, building on a tradition which was started on the first Safer Internet Day.
