17% of Finnish children have had online sessions over 10 hours9 March 2005
In a recent survey, few Finnish children saw problems with their online behaviour.
Most, however, agree with parental control of their use of the Internet. |
Nine out of 10 children think that their parents have a right to restrict their Internet use. This is one of the findings from a questionnaire made by Save the Children Finland and Elämä on Parasta Huumetta, an association principally involved in drug abuse prevention.
The questionnaire was carried out through the popular website "Habbo Hotel". Almost 3000 Finnish children answered and almost half of these were under 13 years old.
The survey also addressed the amount of time children spend online. A number of respondents were heavy Internet users. 12 % spend more than 20 hours a week online and 17 % have sometimes been on the Internet more than 10 hours in a row.
However, most of the children did not consider their Internet use problematic. In fact, 69.7 % thought their use was well balanced, while 26.5% said they use the Internet too little and only 3.7% considered their online time excessive.
Finnish website Tiukula.fi publishes a number of "children’s voices". They express a number of diverse attitudes to the Internet. A nine-year-old boy says, "The Internet is a place that knows almost everything." In contrast a nine-year-old girl says, "I don’t like the Internet because there are so many stupid websites."
