Czech Minister launches safer Internet story-telling competition10 March 2005
Dr. Petra Buzková, Czech Minister for Education, Sports and Youth, launched the competition on 8 February 2005, Safer Internet Day.
The initiative is one of a number of actions taken to raise Internet safety awareness in the Czech Republic. |
Dr. Buzková said, “I welcome the initiative of the CzeSI project to promote Safer Internet in the Czech Republic. Safer Internet Day is launched for the first time in our country and I am sure that interesting activities such as the story-telling competition bring innovation and attractiveness for kids and help teachers to educate children in a modern way."
The Czech Republic is one of 19 countries holding the story-telling competition. Young people are invited to send in their stories, featuring a number of safer Internet cartoon characters. The competition is organised under the patronage of Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Information Society and Media.
“CzeSI” is the EU’s Safer Internet Programme awareness node for the Czech Republic. On 8 February 2005 it organised Safer Internet Day in the Czech Republic and launched a website in both Czech and English. The site gives an overview of Internet safety issues in the Czech republic and advice such as the “Ten Commandments” on safe Internet use for parents and young people.
Young people are often skeptical of anything that looks like regulation. CzeSI aims to ensure that the message is one of freedom of choice not censorship. There are already signs that this safer Internet message is getting out to young people in the Czech republic. Lupa, one of the most popular sites for young people, is among those that have highlighted the issue.
The campaign is also supported by partners such as Czech Vogel Burda Communications and Nase Dite (Our Child Foundation.)
