Saferinternet.pl partners “My first mobile phone” Social Campaign Nowadays, when a mobile phone is generally accessible, even for children, it is very important to know what the consequences of irresponsible use might be. That’s why one of the Polish mobile operators CenterNet S.A., in cooperation with Saferinternet.pl Project, has organized a nationwide action about the rules of safe use of mobile phones. The campaign called “My first mobile”, which is the first step in a long term action, has been running since September 2008.

The main goal of the campaign is to inform children and parents about the rules of using mobile phones. A recent study carried out in Poland, which shows that in the last 2 years the number of 7-14 year olds who own a mobile phone has increased by about 10%, has inspired the organizers to address the issue.

The problem starts when parents who buy a mobile phone for their child only see the advantages and positive sides of it - like the possibility to contact the child whenever it’s necessary and that the child can call parents if anything happens. But buying a mobile may also lead to many unpleasant situations both for parents and children.

The idea behind the “My first mobile” campaign is “Since we should not keep children away from the mobile phones we should at least assure that they know how to use them safely”.

Mobile phones, thanks to the additional features like taking photos or making short videos, are often being used to cyber bully. Therefore it is very important to explain to parents that before they buy a nice phone for their children they should first have a talk with them and explain some of the potential threats and what they should do to avoid dangerous situations.

The main character of the campaign is Fonio – a funny mobile phone who presents the principles of safe and responsible use of mobile phones by children. On the website www.mojapierwszakomorka.pl Fonio is teaching children about the 7 basic principles which they should follow when using mobile phones:

1. Keep your mobile in a safe place.
2. Remember the 112 number – in emergencies it may save somebody’s life. Use it only when necessary.
3. Don’t leave your phone without any credit.
4. Before you call somebody think whether it is really necessary – each phone call costs
5. There are places where you shouldn’t use your phone.
6. The mobile phone is not your friend so remember to keep contact with the real ones.
7. Don’t reply to people you don’t know.

Each principle is explained in a funny and colourful way and there is advice offered for parents on how to talk with children about each issue. Children and parents can ask questions and share they experiences on the online forum. Fonio is answering all inquiries and giving advice.

The campaign is followed by a series of cartoons about Fonio’s adventures as well as TV spots promoting the safe usage of mobile phones.
