Iceland focuses on net ethics

Safe Internet Day was a high-profile event in Iceland. The Minister of Education launched a conference on net ethics and there was a public debate at both local and national level about safer internet issues.

The event generated a lot of media interest.  Much of the debate focused on parents' role in helping their children use the internet in a safe and positive way.

Ketill Magnusson, an ethics philosopher, spoke of the ethical questions we have to ask ourselves when discussing internet use, especially by children .

Thuridur Johannsdottir, an analysis specialist at the University of Education in Iceland told conference guests of her findings, which show that there is a lot of difference is in how children use computers and the internet in schools and at home.

A councillor on information technology and education, Lara Stefansdottir, spoke of how we need to modernise education to include the modern reality of childrens use of technology and the responsibility of adults as role models.
