Super explorers teach Swedish kids awareness16 January 2005
The Swedish awareness node has produced a textbook and teaching aid for young children 5–8 years old, called: “Sniff the net – the first steps to alert use of the internet.” |
One day Emma plays around with her computer. Suddenly a small figure flies out from the screen and presents himself as Snouty. Emma is surprised and naturally cautious but soon she becomes a friend with the tiny super explorer. Together they find out how to learn things about the world, both online and offline. Emma learns five important things in order to become a super explorer too.
• When you want to learn something you need to find out where to find the information. • When you have learned something you need to consider if it is true. • Behind every word and every image is someone who wants something. • If something is scary, weird or seems wrong – talk to an adult. • Your body needs to jump and run. Take breaks and move around.
The material is primarily targeting older preschoolers and the first years in school and its purpose is to lay the foundations for a curious and critical stance to the internet. Teachers and kids can read the short story together.
In addition to the book there is a handbook for teachers with suggestions for discussions, games and other activities related to the story. There are also ideas for activities together by the computer, practical advice on using the Internet as well as suggestions on how parents and children can continue exploring at home.
The material was created by Åsa Kronkvist, who is a qualified author of learning material for young children. She is a preschool teacher and is currently working as an ICT-educationalist at the university of Kristianstad.
