Finland hosts 24-hour Christmas chat

Save the Children and its network opened the Manteli Chat to children and young people for all 24 hours of Christmas Eve. More than 20 trained adult volunteers acted as moderators. While most of the children just needed someone to talk to, other had sever problems. Hopes of a happy Christmas had not come true.

Many of the volunteers were experienced chatters, but said that it was tough to confront children's experiences of Christmas, which in some cases included violence, drugs, depression, even self-destructive thoughts. The task of the Manteli-volunteer was as an adult listener to support children's and young people. A debriefing was offered to the volunteers after the Manteli Chat.

The Manteli chat-room at Habbo Hotel was intended for children 13 - 15 and chat-room at Suomi24 was intended for children 16 - 18. Both chats had room for 40 people. It can be estimated that during the time there were approximately 1000 children that actually visited the chatroom. Manteli campaign site received 17 000 visits.

Manteli Chat experiences are valuable when planning and developing Crisis Chat - a chat service that opens when there is a crisis that strongly affects children, such as the Tsunami disaster a year ago.
