Background Clicksafe

Clicksafe, a large awareness-raising campaign was launched on 2 December 2002 at the Kinepolis Film Theatre in Brussels, Belgium.
Both the federal Minister for Justice, Mr Verwilghen, and the Flemish Minister for Education and Training, Ms Marleen Vanderpoorten, presented the campaign materials: safety guide for teachers, posters for schools, website, boomerang cards, etc.

The campaign was a joint action from the federal Minister of Justice, the regional Ministers of Education, Child Focus, the federal police computer crime unit and the media (VT4). One focus is on awareness raising regarding surf safe issues. The campaign is meant for children, youngsters and teachers. For the teacher a safe ICT guide was developed together with ENIS-school and addressing following issues:
  • The issue of harmful content like pornography. Schools, individuals, parents should learn how to deal with this in classical or private context, which filtering mechanisms exist, receive official info about reporting possibilities and about an integrated pedagogical approach (both talk about it with pupils/children, learn them why pornography is harmful and discriminating and use filters);
  • Safe and efficient communication. Here information is provided about the potential dangers of chat, cyber bullying, the problem of housework websites, netiquette, etc. ;
  • Basic network security in schools and at home to prevent against viruses, hacking, privacy abuse, etc.;
  • Publishing on the internet: what can and what cannot be published, what are the most important IPR-legislations, etc. ;
  • Finally there is the issue about physical aspects of frequent ICT-use such as RSI, eye diseases, etc.

A copy of this guide is available in Dutch only.

In 2003 and 2004 the regional expertise networks provided in-service training about safe ICT use in schools. During the schoolyear 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 information and training sessions for schools and parents were/will be organised by the ENIS-network in collaboration with the Federal Computer Crime Unit.
