80% of Greeks did not use the Internet in 2004

According to Eurostat, Greece ranks last among the 25 members of the European Union in terms of its use of the Internet.
Eurostat’s findings, released in May 2005, showed that only 20% of Greeks aged 16 to 74 used the Internet last year.  This compares with an EU average of 47%. The top spots belong to northern Europe: 82% for Sweden, 76% for Denmark and 70% for Finland.

However, Greek businesses do make use of the Internet. 87% of Greek businesses use the Internet, close to the EU average of 89%.

Greece lags behind in terms of the speed of its Internet connections, particularly ADSL.  In fact Greece is the only EU country where 0% of households had a broadband connection.

The figure was higher among Greek businesses, 21% of which had a broadband connection.  This is however well below the EU average of 53%.

Generally in Greece, according to Eurostat, men use the Internet much more than women. In Greece 23% of men and 16% of women use the Internet.  This compares with EU averages of 51% for men and 43% for women.
