"Internet Safety Training Module" in Germany

Since there is a need in Germany for fundamental training of educators in the area of internet safety, and since there is no tested programme for such training up to now, klicksafe.de and WebPILOTS developed an internet safety training module.
Together with the organisation "Schulen ans Netz" (“Schools on the net” - www.schulen-ans-netz.de) in its project “WebPILOTS”, klicksafe developed a training module for teachers, “Internet Safety and Protection of Minors in the Media”.

Beginning in June 2006, the module was tested through three pilot courses held in different regions of Germany (north, south, and east). The pilots were designed as one-day courses to acquaint teachers at all school levels with the problematic aspects of internet use and to present options for handling the topic in the classroom.

In addition, klicksafe.de offers teachers a carefully researched array of instruction materials available all over the country relating to specific topics and to various types of schools and that can be used as classroom material.

The module consists of four thematic groups:
  • 1. Viruses, worms & Co. – Basic technical information for teachers
  • 2. Traffic education for the internet – Banning dangers through competent behaviour
  • 3. Dealing with content detrimental to minors
  • 4. Transfer and materials for application in schools (embedded in the thematic areas 1 – 3)

The course was constructed in such a way that participants can actively take part in exercises online. A variety of teaching methods were applied, alternating between group work, individual exercises and discussions supported by an exhibit in order to allow for active experimentation with the units in the sense of action-oriented learning.

At the end of the training, the participants were asked to evaluate the course. The modified module will be used to produce professional training materials for multipliers with a German textbook publisher, so that teachers can be trained in the continuous training institutions of all the federal states.

Additional cooperation partners have already been integrated into the project to achieve as wide dissemination as possible for the module. Currently, klicksafe and the project “WebPILOTS” train teachers in several courses all over Germany.
